Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent in the Roman Catholic Church, a 40-day season of prayer, fasting, and conversion as we prepare for Easter.
Receiving ashes is a sign of repentance and humility, reminding us of our mortality and our need for God’s mercy: “Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
Ash Wednesday is also a day of fasting, inviting us to simplify and turn our hearts back to God. Catholics fast by eating one full meal and two smaller meals that together do not equal a full meal (no eating between meals).
