What to Expect During Mass
You Are Welcome Here

If you've never attended Mass, or if it’s been a while, we’re truly glad you're here. Whether you're exploring the faith or simply curious, we know the experience might feel unfamiliar at first. That’s why we've created this simple guide to help you feel more comfortable during your visit.

The Structure of the Mass

Holy Mass is beautifully structured around two main parts:

1. Liturgy of the Word

This part of the Mass centers on listening to God’s Word:

  • Begins with a procession and opening prayers
  • Penitential Rite: We acknowledge our need for God's mercy
  • Kyrie ("Lord, have mercy")
  • Scripture readings:
    • Old Testament
    • Responsorial Psalm
    • New Testament
    • Gospel
  • Homily: A brief reflection from the priest
  • Creed: We stand and profess our shared faith (Nicene or Apostles’ Creed)
  • Prayers of the Faithful: We lift up needs for the Church, the world, and one another

2. Liturgy of the Eucharist

This is the heart of Catholic worship:

  • Bread and wine are brought to the altar
  • The priest consecrates the gifts, through the power of the Holy Spirit, they become the true Body and Blood of Christ
  • Out of reverence, we kneel during this sacred moment
  • Holy Communion:
    • Catholics who are spiritually prepared may receive the Eucharist
    • If you’re not Catholic or not ready to receive, you're welcome to come forward with arms crossed over your chest to receive a blessing instead

After Communion, we spend time in silent prayer, and then the priest offers a final blessing and sends us forth to share the love of Christ in the world.

A Note About Receiving Communion

To receive the Eucharist, Catholics are encouraged to be:

  • In a state of grace (free of mortal sin)
  • At peace with God and others
  • Fasting for at least one hour beforehand

If someone is not yet ready, they are lovingly invited to receive God’s mercy through the Sacrament of Reconciliation before returning to Communion.

Come As You Are

You don’t have to “have it all together” to attend Mass. We’re all here seeking the same thing: a deeper relationship with God and each other.
